My mother was a Shirley Basey fan her whole life, so much so she named me after Shirley’s dog….. and I therefore grew up with her songs marking various moments in my life. I am amazed at how her image both physically and her professional image has not faltered, she looks amazing for her age and if my mother was still alive she would say the same. Congratulations and keep it up! x Emily
Just simply wonderful. I should be in my bed hours ago and I just couldn’t leave the telly watching a true superstar. At 39 years old I never really appreciated the true quailty of Shirley’s work and how she has managed to keep the personnel life personnel. Well done and may many learn from you for many the years to come. Colette.
Sheer brilliance. I too was first introduced to Dame Shirley Bassey by my mother. Last night’s coverage with Alan Yentab to Graham Norton’s show was absolute entertainment. It was great to get an insight into how she approaches her music. A true Diva, she is undoubtedly the best female singer ever. Her live performances are a must – long may they continue.
Amazing programmes; The Roundhouse & Imagine so glad I recorded them!
I too grew up with Shiurley Bassey – my Mum was her greatest fan…….. I am so pleased she has lost none of her panache and the range is still awesome. A true ’superstar’
BBC – Well done – what a fabulous programme but why so late at night, and please repeat it. Shirley was just incredible, full of fun one minute, meloncoly the next. The song writers did her proud, and to pick a favourite from the Album ‘Performance’would be nye impossible. Truly fantastic, warm, genuine a real star. I defy anyone not to be moved to tears by the title piece – every sinew in her was in that song. Keep going Shirley, it proves you CAN still be a star today, and you really are a true DIVA.

In my 50s now and never been much of a fan of our *Dame*, save knowing she has been around forever and has the voice of conviction, determination, strength and love.
In to my life came this old sweet memory of oh so long ago, courtesy of Radio 2. She’s changed all the songs I’d known that were just *ok*, not my cup of tea, and I’d never buy them. A variation on a theme you could say. Is it the songs or her age? No! It’s a rare alignment of the planets, a once in a lifetime meeting of great minds and collaberation that have allowed Dame Shirley to grab me, shake me and shout “I’m still here and I still have something to say”
The haunting tune and lyric of Tiger Bay ensure we are in the presence of something really special, it’s not just a song it’s a lifetime of heart and soul. I’m well and truly hooked, grab it and savour every moment while we can and thank God we get to share Dame Shirley.
“ The wild swan’s death-hymn took the soul
Of that waste place with joy
Hidden in sorrow: at first to the ear
The warble was low, and full and clear; …
But anon her awful jubilant voice,
With a music strange and manifold,
Flow’d forth on a carol free and bold;
As when a mighty people rejoice
With shawms, and with cymbals, and harps of gold… ”
Tennyson’s poem “The Dying Swan”
